About Me?

I started out in book publishing as an editor at a book publishing house. I had a BA in journalism, a minor in graphic design, a really good agent, and the highest score anyone had ever made on the publisher’s editing test.

The salary was low, but the company had a publishing library bigger than the public library in my home town, so I accepted the job in lieu of graduate school. I made it my business to learn everything possible in two years.

It was a great experience. I took home armloads of publishing periodicals to read every night, sat in on vendor meetings, hung around the master typesetters across the street asking endless questions, and read every book on typography in the public library system. I memorized the publishing reference books and style books on my desk—and bought more.

After two years (one as Senior Editor) of publishing books, I was recruited by the largest PR firm in the world as an account executive. I used that job to study corporate identity with one of the best design strategists in the U.S.

After a stint as ad manager for a small publishing company, I joined a consumer ad agency as a copywriter and PR rep. When someone referred a client to me that the agency could not represent, I left to start my own consulting business.

And that was just the beginning.
